FAQ Questions About Cornerstone Revolutions, Inc. and Cornerstone PowerAdvisor Asset Management Software

Q.
Provide some context for the arrival of Cornerstone PowerAdvisor asset management software in the field of portfolio management tools. Is this a market with an extensive selection of products for the investment advisor to choose from?

A.
The choices of portfolio management software available to the investment advisor have always been limited. The highly anticipated Web-based application from Techfi Corporation, with its open database architecture and Windows-like menus and interfaces, was introduced in 2000 as the portfolio management software system of the future. But by 2002, it had already been absorbed by Advent Software, Inc. On September 21 of this year, Advent announced it was ceasing all support of Advent/Techfi packaged software products by June, 2005, effectively limiting the choices once again.

While the market seems to be moving toward a Web-based application, which eliminates the need for software installation and maintenance and requires only a minimal amount of computer knowledge, no new Web-based solutions have been introduced since Techfi.

Web-based applications existing prior to Techfi include StatementOne (now Albridge Solutions) and Investigo. Schwab is currently replacing Centerpiece with PortfolioCenter as its networked application.

Web-based vs Desktop Applications
The major concern about Web-based applications, particularly in the data-driven industry of portfolio management, is one of data control and security.

With the introduction of the PowerAdvisor desktop application into the market, advisors enjoy the security of keeping their data on their local systems and the advantage of accessibility to that data without the restrictions of a proprietary database.

Experience and Innovative Solutions
In contrast to software developers who have a marketable solution to an industry need but little practical experience in the field, Cornerstone brings extensive industry experience and an innovative solution to their target market.

For a company distinguished from other portfolio management software developers with its over 120 years of combined experience in the investment advising and financial industries, PowerAdvisor is a breakaway model not just for a software solution but for a way to do business.

With the PowerAdvisor application, Cornerstone provides independent advisors the tools they need to build and assess a client's total portfolio picture. In the competitive field of investment advising where clients are increasingly seeking one manager for all their financial needs, that can only translate into an advantage.

Q.
Who is Cornerstone's target market? How did this shape the way you designed PowerAdvisor?

A.
PowerAdvisor was specifically designed for financial advisors, independent reps, investment managers, and other industry professionals looking for an affordable alternative in portfolio management software. Cornerstone recognizes the conditions that are unique to the independent investment advisor and built solutions that would support the reality of an advisor working alone or with a small staff into the application.

Cornerstone actively chose a desktop application over a Web-based program to keep control of client data in the hands of the advisor. When investment advisors leave larger firms to set up their own business, it's often over issues of control, independence, and flexibility.

Operating alone without back office support, a compliance department, or IT staff, these advisors need a software program that bridges some of those gaps with features that a) are familiar and user friendly b) deliver a ready solution, not just an approximation and c) provide a time-saving advantage to the user.

Ease of Use
PowerAdvisor developers kept the end user in mind in choosing the familiar Windows-based desktop application, making it easy to get started and navigate the program. This means that when a client calls wanting a snapshot of their assets to date while they're holding on the other end of the line, advisors need a fast path to client accounts and the information they need displayed in a format that gives them the complete picture on one screen.

Audit-Ready Solutions
Cornerstone has distinguished itself from other portfolio management software by developing its compliance reporting feature above and beyond what is standard to similar products in the field.

While competitor's products can produce reports that can, in part, be used for compliance purposes or reconfigured to provide information requested during an audit, the PowerAdvisor application comes with a full suite of reports specifically designed for compliance/audit purposes.

Cornerstone also has taken the extra step of retaining compliance specialists to guide compliance report development. Cornerstone recognizes the compliance burden as becoming increasingly difficult to handle and offers users an affordable component to their compliance program. This feature alone is a market differentiator and often been cited as the dealmaker in an advisor's decision to buy PowerAdvisor software.

Time Is More Than Money
Solutions that save time are easy to translate into dollars. Solutions that save time and build a business translate into an investment in the future. PowerAdvisor's QuickEntry historical performance tool, when used for client prospecting, easily produces a historical portfolio performance report of a prospect's held away assets for comparative evaluation purposes. When a prospect becomes a client, the advisor can easily switch from QuickEntry summary data to detailed entry.

PowerAdvisor provides independent advisors the technology and service solutions they need to minimize the time spent on back office, compliance, and record keeping details and increase the time available for client prospecting. For independent advisors, it means operating with the confidence only a professional toolset can offer in managing their clients and their business.

Q.
What do you think are the three most important features that drive the choice of investment advisors selecting a portfolio management software package?

A.
Cost, functionality, and ease of use. At the end of the day, these three features are going to keep overhead down, the number of services available to clients up, and evenings and weekends spent struggling with hard to navigate, anti-intuitive, portfolio management software a thing of the past.

Priced for Independence
PowerAdvisor is targeted to the independent investment professional and priced accordingly. Initial start up fees plus one year of maintenance start at $3,750 for one user. Additional PowerAdvisor workstations can be added for $500 per station per year plus support.

. NET Framework for Functionality
With the open architecture of the Microsoft SQL database, PowerAdvisor developers can extend the functionality of the application using the .NET Framework without requiring users to purchase new software or hardware. This leaves PowerAdvisor capable of expanding into new technology where other software programs may not be prepared to go.

Intuitive Interface
Front and center for most advisors dissatisfied with their current portfolio management system is the inconvenience of and trepidation about learning a new software program. For advisors who don't consider themselves to be particularly computer savvy, PowerAdvisor designers put extra effort into their Windows-based desktop application with an intuitive interface that uses a uniform screen layout and consistent use of color to make screens easy to understand and follow.

Switching to PowerBroker
Cornerstone goes the extra distance to make switching to a new platform easy for advisors with a minimum of disruption in client services. With Cornerstone's JumpStartSM services, the PowerAdvisor Support Team, working with the new PowerAdvisor user, secures a custodial download of client accounts, initial positions, and securities and collaborates on data mapping and creates a database to user specifications. The database is then delivered to the PowerAdvisor client on a CD, ready to install into their PowerAdvisor software.

Choosing the most important piece of software in an investment professional's office while continuing to provide the service their clients deserve, means advisors will be looking for two things-the best product and the company that supports it.

No asset management software program available today is going to hold value without an experienced team of developers behind it, a strong service team supporting it, and an administrative team that understands how to use it to create solutions for the independent investment advisor.
